PMP Exam Structure

Exam Format:

  • 180 multiple-choice questions.
  • Involves situational responses, matching, and fill-the-blanks.
  • Total time: 3 hours, 50 minutes, excluding 10-minute breaks. 

The weightage of the Exam is divided as follows:

  1. People – 42 per cent 

    The candidate is tested on team-building exercises, leadership skills, and risk management. Moreover, these topics constitute most of the questions in the Exam.

    2. Process- 50 per cent

      Tests managing skills of candidates through budget management, adhering to timelines, and implementation of various Project Management approaches.

      3. Business Environment- 8 per cent

        This PMP Exam tests candidates on various domains of Project Management, such as: 

        1. Firstly, Initiating: Project initiation processes and techniques. 
        2. Secondly, Planning: Comprehensive planning methods.

        4. Fourthly, Monitoring and Controlling: Tracking project progress and making necessary adjustments.

        PMI has adopted a more scientific approach by using psychometric analysis to determine the PMP passing score. PMI’s PMP Proficiency Levels

        • Represents a candidate’s passing score in five domains: ‘Proficient,’ ‘Moderately Proficient,’ and ‘Below Proficient.’
        • A passing score is also based on ranking in five Process Groups compared to other candidates and certified professionals.
        • PMI’s pass rate formula is (Number of Passed PMP Exam) / (Number of Sat for PMP Exam).
