The world of Pokemon is so vast and expanding that it is almost impossible to understand how many of them are there. The world of Pokemon is expanding throughout eight generations, and each of them has unique skills, powers, designs, and forms.

No, I won’t ghost you by answering that there are many pokemon instead of answering with a specific number. Alright, according to Wikipedia, there are 915 species available in the world. But, some other famous sources like USAtoday claim that there are 905 available. 

It has been almost twenty years Since the first pokemon game came out. The Pokemon games have been among the 25 best-selling video games of all time. With the entry of a new pokemon, users get a new slate of Pokemon.

The gaming franchise started with Satoshi Tajiri in early 1989. These Pokemon are fantastical creatures that drive inspiration from almost everything. It may be from animals, plants, or popular mythical figures. While some pokemon tend to be more grounded, some are legendary. Some of these can evolve into more powerful and legendary. 

This brings the question, how many legendary Pokemon are there? Well, the answer would be 62. From what I can remember, each of the generations has introduced three legendary Pokemon. 

These are divided into different generations named by different colors. Here is a generation-wise division of Pokemons –

The first generation of Pokemon came out in 1996 with the Game Boy Games. Red and Green had all the classic Pokemon we know and love. Here are some names that might ring a bell –

pre-existing Pokemons of the first generation. 

There were no new famous names in this generation, but Totodile got its fair share of the fanbase. There were five new legendary Pokemon in this generation. They included Raikou, Entei, Suicune Ho-oh, and Lugia.

The third generation of Pokemons included 135 Pokémon Flying-Ground-type Flygon and Plusle, and Minun. This generation added eight legendary Pokemon, and Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza soon became the favorite of most fans. Regice, Registeel, and Regirock came to existence in the third generation of Pokemon.

Generation four had a lesser number than the previous generation. They added 107 pokemon in Generation IV. Empoleon, Infernape, and Torterra are included in this generation. Some new evolutionary forms like Leafeon, Glaceon, and Magmortar came out in this generation. Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit, the lake guardian trio, and the creation trio were added in this generation.

While playing pokemon cards, you might think, how many pokemon cards are there? But, did you know that the fifth generation of Pokemon added the most Pokemon ever? They added 156 new pokemon in this generation. Like Archeops, there were many dual-type Pokemon in the fifth generation.

While generation five was more robust in terms of adding more pokemon, the sixth generation added only 72 of them in total. But thankfully, most of this generation was of brand new species, not the evolved form of the previous ones. Delphox, Greninja, and Aegislash are some recognizable additions to this generation.

The seventh generation added 88 Pokemons. It was the first generation that introduced new regional forms of Pokemons from before. Most importantly, this generation added eleven legendary types. Many fans loved the addition of massive numbers of legendary pokemon in this generation.

Generation VIII adds 96 pokemon making the number go up to 905. Pokemons with swords and shields were the specialty of this new generation. Grookey, Troxel, and Snom were the latest additions to this generation. The eighth generation added more legendary type pokemon with Pokemons like Zacian and Zamazenta. Kubu and Urshifu were also notable names in this generation.
