There are so many great topics to choose from when deciding to learn remotely.

Studying MA Education online has become an increasingly popular choice in recent years. This is largely due to the benefits of studying for this type of degree from home. It means that those already working in education can fit their studies into their lives with greater ease, as opposed to attending an in-person course.

Other popular topics to study at the MA level currently include public health, business administration, and environmental studies.

Productivity Challenges

How To Improve Your Productivity When Studying Online

One of the largest challenges for some people when studying from home is being able to keep productivity levels up.

When you are learning in a classroom environment, it can be much easier to stay on task. This is because you have arrived in the room with a purpose and everyone is focused on the same goal.

You may be working collaboratively in small groups or learning directly from the teacher at the front of the room. You may also be studying independently, but doing so at the same time as other people and therefore are motivated to stay on task.

If you find it difficult to stay focused at home then you are definitely not alone. It’s easy to get distracted by countless things, such as other people, your pets, or Netflix, to name just a few!

I designed the following top tips to help you keep your productivity levels up when you are studying online from home.

These are ideas you might want to implement all at once, or perhaps you will want to gradually make them a regular part of your learning process.

Create Your Space

Having a structured and organized place in which to study can go a long way to enhancing your productivity.

If you have space in your home to set up a desk, then you can create a dedicated work area for yourself.

If you do not have space, then you may want to take over the dining table or to make a temporary desk for yourself somewhere else in the home. You can then equip your desk (or alternative space) with everything you need for studying.

This might include:

  • Your computer
  • Your textbooks
  • Additional course materials
  • Notepad
  • Pens

Having everything you need in the same place is a great way to save time. This is because you will not have to stop what you are doing to go and look for something when you need it.

Having a dedicated workspace will also help you to truly get in the zone when you are studying. This area is a place that you come to for work and your mind will soon adjust to this.

Additionally, if you are attending online video lessons as a part of your course, then it is helpful to be able to do this in your own space where you are not going to be interrupted.

Set A Schedule

Set A Schedule

Having a schedule can go a lot when you do not have someone guiding you through a study session, such as you would in a classroom, then it can feel easier to put things off and come back to them later.

The problem with this is that you may leave things too late and then begin to feel as though your work is piling up. Avoiding feelings of overwhelm is key to keeping yourself on track and feeling good about your studies.

Creating a schedule for yourself, and really trying hard to stick to it, can help to overcome this problem.

You may find it additionally helpful for motivation if you add fun rewards into your schedule. This can encourage you to complete your work so that you can enjoy the reward guilt-free. This may include things such as baking yourself a treat, going for a walk, watching an episode of your favorite show, or anything else that you really enjoy.

Have a Real Routine

Have a Real Routine

When you are studying from home, it’s difficult to separate this from other areas of your life.

Being at home can make it easy to justify working from your bed in your pyjamas, but this kind of attitude can be a real drain on your productivity and motivation.

Having a pre-study routine can help to set the boundaries between home-time and study-time. This can be as simple as having a shower and getting dressed before you arrive at your desk. It could also involve a short workout or a gentle jog outdoors before your learning begins.

The key is to set yourself up for a study session that it feels like you have arrived at, just as if you had left the house to go to university. The previous point of having a dedicated workspace in the home is important here and can go a long way to help.

Staying Productive

Studying any kind of course in any format is going to require a serious effort from you. You are only going to get out of these opportunities what you put into them, and this is always going to be down to what you decide to do.

So, make the most of this chance you have been given and take steps to stay productive!
