Above all, yoga helps people lose weight. Like anything else, though, it is not a panacea. It will be most effective when paired with a balanced diet, wholesome foods, and regular exercise.

In this blog, I will go over the facts, bust some myths, and go over various yoga poses that can help you feel fantastic while losing weight.

First Things First: What is Yoga?

First Things First_ What is Yoga

Before we learn about the benefits of weight loss, let’s take a quick look at what yoga is really about.

Yoga is an ancient practice that combines three major things altogether:

  • Physical postures or Asanas.
  • Breathing exercises or Pranayama.
  • Meditation or Dhyana.

The main goal is simple: to connect your body, mind, and spirit in the right way. This connection further helps to enhance overall well-being.

Now, yoga can come in many different forms. It can include gentle stretches or several intense sequences.

We will discuss yoga for weight loss and examine some of the specific yoga types that can increase heart rates and help burn calories.

Fact vs. Myth: Is Yoga Good for Weight Loss?

Fact vs. Myth_ is yoga good for weight Loss

In this section, we will debunk some of the myths around weight loss and yoga. I know you might have already heard a few things that may have sounded too good to be true! But let’s separate the facts from the fiction. Read on…

Let’s start by debunking some myths around yoga and weight loss. I know you might have heard a few things that sound too good to be true, but let’s separate the facts from the fiction.

Myth #1: Yoga Is Just About Stretching and Breathing

Yoga Is Just About Stretching and Breathing

This is the most common misconception. Some yoga poses may only include stretching and breathing techniques.

However, you may encounter certain yoga poses that are pretty intense (I was all in sweat and tears practicing them, trust me!).

For example, Vinyasa Yoga or Flow Yoga requires you to transition from one pose to another. I must tell you, it can give you a solid workout!

On the other hand, Power yoga takes things to the next level. It involves faster movements. Do you know what the toughest part is? You will have to hold your positions for a few minutes. This can help you to burn all your calories.

So, the fact is:

Yoga can help you burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. It demands more and more physical styles, such as Vinyasa and Power Yoga.

You may not burn as many calories as you would in a high-intensity workout. However, if you practice yoga regularly, you will still reap some benefits.

Myth #2: Yoga Won’t Help You Lose Belly Fat

Yoga Won’t Help You Lose Belly Fat

There is another popular myth that says yoga cannot help you with belly fat. I mean, we all aim for a flat belly, right? Now, yoga may not help you reduce belly fat in one area. However, it can help reduce overall belly fat!

The process may seem a little slow to you, but if you practice yoga consistently, you can see the changes.

So, the fact is:

Yoga can help you improve your overall body composition. It can help build muscles and increase overall flexibility. Moreover, the combination of balanced poses can help you lose fat.

In addition, yoga helps with stress reduction. A high cortisol level leads to abdominal fat, and yoga can lower your cortisol levels.

So, yes! Yoga is more like an indirect help to your fat loss journey!

Myth #3: You Have to Do Yoga Every Day for Weight Loss

You Have to Do Yoga Every Day for Weight Loss

I get it! You might feel like yoga is a magical solution to all your problems. However, can we commit to doing yoga every single day, especially when we have such a busy schedule from Monday to Saturday?

The idea of “you have to do yoga every day” is not entirely true! Consistency leads to proper and desired results.

So, the fact is:

You can practice yoga by combining it with some other forms of exercise as well as healthy habits. Try to aim for at least 2-3 yoga sessions per week along with other exercises such as cardio, walking, or strength training to lose weight.
